Brea Sister City Program
Sister City Program; Get Involved Today!
The City of Brea has participated in the program with three cities in three different countries: Lagos de Moreno, Mexico; Hanno, Japan and Anseong, Republic of Korea. Brea’s original sister city is Lagos de Moreno, Mexico, which was adopted in 1969. Another long-standing relationship has been established with Hanno, Japan since 1980. More recently, Anseong, Republic of Korea, became Brea’s newest Sister City in 2011.
You are encouraged to learn more about each of the sister cities and consider how you might want to get involved. Each of the City cities host various activities and events that offer a chance to meet new people and learn about other cultures. Please visit the individual websites for details. In conjunction with periodic visits, City staff works closely with two community based non-profit organizations. The Brea Sister City Association is a volunteer organization that facilitates long-running adult and student exchange programs between the citizens of Brea, California and citizens from Lagos de Moreno, Mexico and Hanno, Japan. Additionally, the Brea Korea Sister City Association was formed to develop similar activities for Anseong. These associations are open to new members and would welcome your new ideas and energy.
Although each of these Sister Cities has a population that is more than double that of Brea’s, they all share some important characteristics. These qualities would be: strong community values; support for residents of all ages; good schools; a vibrant business sector; appreciation for visual and performing arts; involved city officials; and most importantly, an openness to developing new friendships. Through its involvement the City of Brea has continued to build bridges of international understanding with ongoing visitor and student exchanges.
The Sister City program was first established in October 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote international goodwill through greater understanding of cultures and lifestyles.
